Algiers, September 29, 2025 – In a ceremony steeped in historical symbolism, Ambassador Atilio Berardi unveiled a commemorative plaque on Argentina Street, in downtown Algiers, to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Argentina and Algeria.
The ceremony marks the solemn closing of the commemorations held throughout the year and projects the solid bilateral relationship into the future.
The ceremony was attended by the Wali of Sidi M'Hamed, Mr. Benchaoulia Mohamed Amine; the President of the Popular Assembly of Central Algiers, Ms. Mahdia Benghalia; and the Director General for the Americas of the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Ahmed Hachemi. The Argentine delegation was led by Ambassador Atilio Berardi and accompanied by the entire Embassy team.
As guest of honor, Mr. Luis Mahmoud Muñiz, son of Roberto Muñiz, known as "Mahmoud the Argentine," attended. He was a volunteer who joined the struggle for Algerian independence in 1959. His figure was highlighted as a founding symbol of fraternity between the two peoples and as a living testament to the solidarity that preceded and shaped diplomatic relations.
Ambassador Berardi expressed Argentina's gratitude to the Wilaya of Algiers for the concrete gesture of designing and installing the plaque on Rue République Argentine, emphasizing that this event "honors a common history woven with respect, solidarity, and a shared vision." The plaque marks the culmination of the sixtieth anniversary commemorations, establishing in public space the memory of six decades of friendship, cooperation, and solidarity between the two nations.
The event reflects the collective commitment to continue writing the next chapters of this bilateral relationship, cemented by shared values and sincere cooperation that has been constantly enriched over these six decades.
