60th Anniversary of Resolution 2065 on the Question of the Malvinas Islands

Adopted on December 16, 1965, by an overwhelming majority with no dissenting votes, Resolution 2065 (XX) represents a landmark achievement of Argentine diplomacy. Through this resolution, the international community recognized the existence of a sovereignty dispute between the Argentine Republic and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland over the Malvinas Islands, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, and the surrounding maritime areas. Furthermore, the resolution urged both parties to find a solution to the dispute as soon as possible through bilateral negotiations, taking into account the interests—not the wishes—of the people of the Islands.

Since the adoption of Resolution 2065 (XX), the Argentine Republic has enjoyed broad and sustained support from the international community, expressed in successive resolutions of the General Assembly and the Special Committee on Decolonization, as well as in numerous declarations from regional and multilateral forums urging the United Kingdom to resume sovereignty negotiations.

In this ongoing pursuit of our claim, based on reason and diplomacy, we Argentinians have a valuable ally: the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria, an undisputed leader in the global cause of decolonization.

In this regard, we invite you to read the articles published by Ambassador Atilio Berardi in the Algerian newspapers “Le Jeune Indépendant” and “Le Quotidien d'Oran.”
