Independence Day celebration in Algiers

This July 9, in an event led by Ambassador Atilio Berardi, the proclamation of Argentine Independence was commemorated in an especially significant framework upon marking 60 years of diplomatic relations between Argentina and Algeria.

The gathering was attended by members of the Argentine community, businessmen linked to binational trade, representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Algeria, members of the accredited diplomatic corps and Algerian authorities headed by the Minister of Commerce and Export Promotion, Tayeb Zitouni. Also present were Major General Abdelhafid Bekhouche, Director General of Customs of Algeria, and Mr. Ahmed Bessine, member of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Algerian National Assembly.

During his speech, Ambassador Atilio Berardi highlighted that “since its beginnings in 1964, the bilateral bond has been reaffirmed and enriched over time” highlighting the high-level meetings, which had their starting point with the visit to Algeria of former President Ricardo Alfonsín in 1984.

Also, he highlighted the commissioning of the Draria nuclear center by the Argentine company Invap, which was the first nuclear reactor built by this company abroad, as a sign of the long-term commitment of the binational bond.

Ambassador Berardi highlighted in his speech that Algeria is an important trading partner of Argentina, regularly being among the main destinations for foreign sales, pointing out that the links in this area are primarily based on the complementary nature of our economies. In that sense, he expressed that "the challenge we face is, on the one hand, the deepening of commercial ties and, on the other, the diversification of products and sectors", indicating that "from the Embassy we have the firm disposition to support the business sector of both countries " to increase these links”.

Finally, he extended the sincere gratitude of the Argentine Republic to the historical and permanent support that the government and people of Algeria have given to the legitimate Argentine claims on the issue relating to the Malvinas Islands in the various international forums.
