Last November, Ambassador Atilio Berardi and the embassy team received an INVAP mission led by its General Manager, Engineer Darío Giussi, with whom we collaborated in developing their agenda in Algeria.
Among the important meetings we held, we highlight the one with the Minister of Energy, Mohamed Arkab, with whom progress was made in examining the modernization of the nuclear facilities at the Draria Nuclear Research Center, as well as the creation of a laboratory for the production of radioactive isotopes for medical and industrial purposes.
Cooperation in the field of peaceful uses of nuclear energy between Algeria and Argentina dates back to 1985, with the aim of meeting specific Algerian needs such as scientific training, the production of isotopes and radioactive materials for medical and industrial applications, nuclear medicine, medical imaging and radiotherapy, nuclear safety and security, nuclear engineering, and the management and treatment of radioactive waste.
Visit to the NUR Nuclear Reactor built by INVAP
Thanks to bilateral cooperation agreements between our countries, important nuclear facilities have been built, including the 1-megawatt Nuclear Uranium Reactor (NUR), intended for scientific research and training, as well as a unit for the development of nuclear energy components.
For this reason, within the framework of this mission, Ambassador Atilio Berardi visited the NUR Nuclear Reactor, built by INVAP as a multipurpose plant capable of producing radioisotopes and serving as a training reactor for future nuclear engineers and physicists, thus contributing to science in Algeria.
Along with General Manager Darío Giussi, the mission included Felipe Albornoz, Nuclear Business Manager; Tulio Calderón, Advisor to the General Management; Dr. Valeria Mogliani, Head of Legal Affairs; Edgardo Simoncini, Head of the Algeria Project; and Malena Ortiz, Head of the INVAP Branch in North Africa and the Middle East.
